Rocky Mountain Forest Products Increases Lumberyard Revenue by $26M in 4 years

Colorado-based lumberyard realizes steep revenue increase since 2017 despite worldwide lumber shortages, pandemic restrictions, and supply chain interruptions.

Since 1974, Rocky Mountain Forest Products has supplied homeowners and contractors in Colorado with high-quality fencing, decking, and siding products. Their extensive network of suppliers built over nearly five decades allowed them to fair better than most during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s revenue increased from $14 million in 2017 to $40 million in 2021.

This latest economic downturn is not the first major disruption RMFP has had to face. The recession in the mid-1980’s nearly forced them to close their doors, but it opened their minds to new business strategies. Diversifying their product lines, streamlining operations, and taking a proactive marketing approach allowed them to make RMFP the largest cedar wood supplier in Colorado and prepared them to face future economic challenges.

While consumer and commercial demands for lumber have skyrocketed in the past two years, supply has remained scarce, frustrating efforts by builders and lumberyards nationwide to keep up. “RMFP was able to weather the storms well because we were prepared,” stated Taylor Poole, Chief Growth Officer for RMFP. “We built relationships with suppliers and created a network within the industry that allowed us to anticipate shortages and respond quickly to customer demand. Our success over the last four years shows just how resilient the company can be.”

RMFP serves over 1 million Colorado customers, including over 2500 building contractors. Because they are a larger lumberyard, they can offer a wider variety of wood and synthetic wood products, including composite fencing, reclaimed wood, beetle kill pine, as well as popular cedar and redwood decking options

Educating DIYers and mom-and-pop startups about best building practices is integral to the RMFP business model. Their podcast, “The Mill,” highlights different aspects of the industry to help expand the skill set of individuals and contractors alike.
