Olympic Steel, Inc. (Nasdaq: ZEUS), a leading national metals service center, today announced financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2021.
Net income for the first quarter totaled $22.0 million, or $1.91 per diluted share, compared with net income of $0.6 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2020. The results include $1.0 million of LIFO pre-tax expense in the first quarter of 2021, compared with $0.5 million of LIFO pre-tax income in the same period a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA for the first quarter of 2021 was $37.8 million, compared with $7.5 million in the first quarter of 2020.
The Company reported record sales for the first quarter of 2021, totaling $463 million, compared with $354 million in the first quarter of 2020.

Favorable market conditions and record-high metals pricing, along with the disciplines we reinforced in 2020 to reduce operating expenses and improve inventory management, combined to deliver record financial performance,” said Richard T. Marabito, Chief Executive Officer. “All of our segments reported robust growth in profitability as strong demand from our end markets, combined with extended lead times to source metal, resulted in historic low inventories throughout the metals supply chain. We will continue to rely on our long-standing mill supply relationships and our strong cash conversion cycle disciplines to support our customers through this supply-constrained environment. The Board of Directors also approved a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.02 per share, which is payable on June 15, 2021, to shareholders of record on June 1, 2021.
